John Y. Merrell Jr.



























John grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and received his B.A. in economics summa cum laude from Brigham Young University and his J.D. from Stanford Law School, where he was a member of the Editorial Board of the Stanford Law Review. Following law school, John worked for Hunton & Williams in Richmond, Virginia for 3 years before joining his father’s tax practice in 1978. He has resolved a wide variety of issues over his twenty-five years of tax controversy work.

John is admitted to practice in the State of Virginia, before the United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Federal Claims, the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia, the Courts of Appeals for the Federal, Fourth and Sixth Circuits, as well as the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the Fairfax, Virginia and American Bar Associations. John spent two and one half years in Belgium and France before attending law school, as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is fluent in French.

John and his wife, Kay, have six children and reside in northern Virginia.
